Our Ranking Approach
Understanding how we rank dentists is essential for making an informed decision about your oral health care. Our algorithm is designed to prioritize practices that demonstrate consistent quality and broad patient satisfaction. Listings within each city and dental category are sorted primarily by aggregated rating scores. However, we do not rely on a simple average; we apply a weighted scoring system that accounts for the volume of feedback.
This approach ensures that a practice with a perfect 5-star rating from only five reviews does not automatically surpass a highly reputable practice with a 4.7-star rating from 500 verified reviews. The latter reflects a more statistically significant level of community trust and consistent service delivery. By balancing high scores with high volume, we aim to surface dentists who have not only satisfied a few patients but have built a sustained record of excellence over time.
Data Sources
Transparency regarding our data origins is a core value of our platform. We primarily utilize public review aggregates sourced from major platforms, with a specific focus on Google Business Profile data. This source is chosen for its widespread adoption, real-time updates, and comprehensive verification processes inherent to the platform.
In addition to external review data, we incorporate official practice information directly provided by dental offices. This includes details about operating hours, location specifics, and service offerings. We cross-reference these two data streams to ensure accuracy. We do not scrape private patient databases or use any non-public medical records. Our methodology is strictly limited to publicly available information that reflects the public face of the practice.
What We Measure
Our ranking algorithm evaluates three distinct pillars of practice performance:
- Average Rating and Review Volume: As mentioned, we calculate a weighted score based on the average star rating and the total number of verified reviews. This metric serves as the primary indicator of patient satisfaction.
- Completeness of Practice Information: A listing is rated higher if it provides comprehensive details. We assess the presence of accurate business hours, a detailed list of services offered, accessibility information (such as wheelchair access), and accepted payment methods. Incomplete profiles are deprioritized as they provide less utility to patients seeking specific care.
- Recency of Updates: We factor in the date of the last verified update to the practice profile. Practices that actively maintain their digital presence are favored, as this suggests ongoing engagement with patient information and current operational status. Stale data is considered less reliable for making immediate healthcare decisions.
What We Do NOT Measure
It is crucial to understand the boundaries of our ranking system. We do not measure clinical outcomes. We have no access to patient health records, surgical success rates, or longitudinal health data. Consequently, our rankings reflect patient experience and satisfaction, not medical efficacy.
Additionally, we do not track insurance acceptance rates in our ranking algorithm. While we allow practices to list accepted payment methods, we do not verify real-time contract status with insurance providers due to the fluid nature of these agreements. We also do not evaluate individual dentist credentials, such as board certifications or continuing education hours, beyond what the practice chooses to self-report on their public profile. These professional qualifications are important, but they are not part of our automated scoring mechanism.
Why a Practice Might Not Appear
If you cannot find a specific dentist in our directory, it is likely due to one of several operational reasons. First, the practice may have limited data availability; if a practice has no public reviews or incomplete profile information, it may not meet the threshold for inclusion. Second, the office may be newly opened and has not yet accumulated sufficient review volume to generate a statistically significant ranking score.
Finally, our directory currently serves a specific set of major metropolitan areas. If a practice is located outside of these covered cities, it will not appear in our search results. We are continuously expanding our coverage, but geographic limitations remain a factor in our current operational scope.
How Practices Can Improve Their Listing
We believe in empowering practices to manage their own digital reputation. To improve their visibility and ranking, practices should claim and verify their Google Business Profile. This ensures that the information displayed is accurate and controlled by the office staff. Encouraging satisfied patients to leave honest, detailed reviews is the most effective way to boost the practice's weighted score. Furthermore, keeping website information current-including updating holiday hours, changing contact numbers, and refreshing service lists-signals to our algorithm that the practice is active and reliable.
We want to be unequivocally clear: we do not accept payment for higher placement. Our rankings are determined solely by the algorithm described above. There are no paid promotions, sponsored listings, or "buy-up" options that can alter the order of results. This commitment to organic ranking ensures that our directory remains a trustworthy resource for consumers.
Limitations
While our ranking methodology is robust, it is important to view directory rankings as a starting point, not a guarantee of fit. A high ranking indicates strong patient satisfaction and good public data hygiene, but it does not account for the personal dynamics of the patient-provider relationship. Patients should evaluate practices based on their specific personal needs.
Consider factors such as insurance compatibility, the need for specialized treatments (e.g., orthodontics or oral surgery), proximity to home or work, and the communication style of the staff. We recommend using our directory to narrow down your options to highly-rated candidates, but the final decision should always involve a direct consultation to ensure the practice aligns with your individual health goals and preferences.
